Mary Amelia Ingalls, sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder, was born on Jan. 10, 1865. This is the person who is represented as “Mary” in both the “Little House” book series and the “Little House on the Prairie” television series, where Melissa Sue Anderson played the role. Unfortunately, the real Mary and the one portrayed on television were in no way alike. The real Mary Ingalls never married, and lived with her younger sister Carrie and her family until her death on Oct. 17, 1928. Mary is buried near her parents in the DeSmet Cemetary in DeSmet, South Dakota.
