The fact that they usually had a dismal and depressing ending didn’t seem to stop people from enjoying his work. London, who had spent years in the Klondike in a fruitless search for gold, instead found his gold in the books he wrJack Londonote with his own experience as a background. OSCAR WILDE 1854-1900

January 30th, 2008

If ever anyone was a living contradiction in terms, it was Oscar Wilde. Born to a doctor who showed nothing but disinterest in his son’s career, but who was still willing to provide him with an excellent education nonetheless, even his beginnings were confusing. His works railed against the Victorian ethics in England, yet he stayed with convention and married for money. Yes, married, with two children, yet imprisoned for the practice of homosexuality. His imprisonment brought an instant end to his career, and he later died of meningitis in a seedy little hotel in Paris. Yet his works are known worldwide… his only novel. “The Picture of Dorian Grey”, has been made into plays and movies in many versions. Indeed, even now, on late night TV, while you are staring at that great plasma tv mount setup you’ve got, you will still occasionally run across it in one form or another.

Oscar Wilde is interred at the Cimetière du Père Lachaise in Paris, France.

Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821

January 28th, 2008

Napoleon Bonaparte is a name that most people are familiar with. Whether your main focus is his love life, starring Desire and Josephine, his military career, including his defeat at Waterloo his rule as emperor, or his ability at real estate flipping (look what he did with Louisiana!), what happened after his death may be even more interesting. For whatever reason, his… er… private parts… were removed before burial (they have since been auctioned off!) and then he was interred in an above ground tomb. He was dressed in full military garb and placed inside six… yes, SIX… coffins. Maybe they got the idea from examining a set of nesting dolls. The coffins are made of mostly different materials… the memorial itself is made of of porphyry from Finland, and inside it, therest of the nested coffins… one of mahogany, two made of lead, one of ebony, and one of oak. I guess they wanted him to be REALLY hard to find! These memorial coffins are located at Les Invalides in Paris, France.

WYATT EARP 1848-1929

January 28th, 2008

You can’t think of the old west or gunfighters without the name “Wyatt Earp” coming to mind. Born in Monmouth Illinois and raised on a farm in Iowa, he grew up to become one of the most famous lawmen of the untamed west. Before becoming a noted lawman, he held jobs as a stagecoach driver, then a buffalo hunter… yeah, really. In Witchita Kansas he began a career in law as a deputy, and the rest is history.

Wyatt Earp is buried in the Hills of Eternity Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo county, California.
