Sir Thomas Crapper is one of those individuals whose work was so famous that his name became a word. Credited in many places with being the inventor of the flush toilet, he actually didn’t invent the thing. He did improve it considerably, and without his inventions, the otherwise impractical and costly toilet would not be a good idea even today. His inventions and improvements. while still a far cry from the directbuy models available today, were their forerunners, and his work on them actually earned him his knighthood.

Sir Thomas Crapper in buried in Beckenham Cemetery in London, England.

Robert Adler 1913-2007

February 10th, 2008

Credited as the co-inventor of the first television remote control device, this man probably had a greater impact on American society than many with more recognisable names. Those first remote controls, which were not wireless, and were a far cry from the average collection of electronic spaghetti HDMI cables found in most modern homes, were still revolutionary for their time. His best known remote control device was from the 1950s, the Zenith Space Command model. He was also iinstrumental in the developement of remote control missile tracking devices for the military. His place of burial is as yet unavailable for publication.

Gracie Allen 1902-1964

February 10th, 2008

You can’t hear the name “Gracie Allen” without pairing it with the name “George Burns”. Gracie, born Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie Allen, entered show business at the tender age of three years when she joined a family dance act, whose other members were her three older sisters. After finishing her education at a Cathlic school, she went into vaudeville, where she met and married George Burns. Their vaudeville act was only minorly successful, but when they went on the radio, they became a hit, and their success grew even more with the advent of television. The onslaught of migraine headaches and a heart condition necessitated a relatively early retirement. She passed away in her sleep.

...

Gracie Allen is interred, along with her famous husband, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Glendale, Los Angeles, California, Plot: Freedom Mausoleum, Sanctuary of Heritage.

Mel Torme 1925-1999

February 10th, 2008

Mel Torme was an extremely accomplished jazz singer, actor, author and composer. Born to Russian immigrants in the Chicago area under the name “Melvin Howard Torma”, he was later better known by his nickname, “The Velvet Fog”. With a career that began when he was four years old and lasted until his death, he was certainly one of the longest loved singers in the country. Many people actually remember him best for his television appearences, including Judge Harry Stone’s unfortunate favorite singer on “Night Court”. His many achievements, honors and awards are too much to list here, but if it could be presented for music, he more than likely had one. In his later days, he spent time entertaining in one hotel in Vegas or another. His cross generation appeal was phenominal.

....

Mel Torme is buried at Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California, in section B, Lot 114, first road left, near the wall.

Rev Thomas James 1804-1891

February 8th, 2008

A very interesting person, who, if born in a different time, might very well have been found on the political stump, handing out personalized pens to potential voters and vowing to make the country a better place. One of four children born into slavery, he became a well known abolitionist and religious leader. At age seventeen he ran away from a cruel master, and, using the Erie Canal line as a guide, eventually made his way to New York, then finally to Canada. Before his death from pneumonia at age 91, he left a record of his legacy, titled “The Life of Reverend Thomas James, By Himself”. He is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, in Rochester, New York.

February 8th, 2008

Along with his partner, William Alvard, John Meads was the leading maker of American Neoclassical furniture in the nineteenth century. Their business eventually grew to encompass the entire Western United States. Their interesting treatment of adaptations of the Grecian style, coupled with innovative use of hand carved details, created a beauty and quality that is nonexistant in modern home and office furniture. John Meads is buried at the Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, Albany County, New York.

Wierd Deaths through the ages

February 5th, 2008

I have to tell you, I almost didn’t include this entry. This List of Odd Deaths does belong here, but I am not writing these up, only including a link, because of the content. While this page is text only, no nasty pictures, there are a couple of sexual references… but some of these deaths were pretty bad, too. There have been some pretty sick people that have walked this earth, and a lot of these listings prove it. So, I have included the link to the site where this list lives… enter at your own risk. The list starts in the BC years and continues to present day.
