William H. Bonney, better known to history as “Billy The Kid”, has always been a fascinating subject for a wide range of people. That the truth of his life was far different from the Hollywood legend never seems to matter one bit. Even the epitaph, chosen for him by those who didn’t know his real story, seems to add to the myth and legend:

Truth and History.
21 Men. The Boy Bandit King
He Died As He Lived
William H. Bonney “Billy the Kid”

FAMOUS EPITAPH: Jesse James

April 6th, 2008

There is actually some question about who is really buried in Jesse James’ official grave. The official story is that he was gunned down, shot in the back, by a member of his own outlaw gang. However, there is an entire museum in Missouri that is dedicated to proving that Jesse James wasn’t the guy shot, and that he lived out his life under an assumed name, eventually dying of old age. If that’s true, then the following epitaph could carry a double meaning…. since the body in the grave is unidentified as well. The epitaph reads:

MURDERD BY A TRAITOR AND A COWARD WHOSE
NAME IS NOT WORTHY TO APPEAR HERE

Massa the Gorilla 1930-1984

April 5th, 2008

Massa the Gorilla had the distinction of being the longest lived lowland gorilla of his time. Initially raised as a pet, this South African native was the real life base for the 1997 movie “Buddy”. Once, in a fit of rage, he showed his strength by ripping the arm off his keeper… not exactly the most pleasant of fellows. His longevity was attributed to a diet of vegetables and vitamins much like those available through Orovo now. It certainly had nothing to do with his environment, a small, concrete floored cage with iron bars all around. He is buried at the Philladelphia Zoological Garden where he lived out mo0st of his life.

Thomas Elmer Braniff 1883-1954

April 5th, 2008

Thomas Elmer Braniff was the president of Prudential, and what he did with various types of life insurance turned the business on it’s ear. Perhaps this was appropriate, as he also managed to found the first airline in the Southwest, Braniff Airlines. He is buried at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas, in Dallas County Texas. We trust that he was adequately insured at the time of his death!

Edward Irvin Scott 1846-1931

April 5th, 2008

Edward Irvin Scott may not strike a chord of recognition when his name is mentioned, but there aren’t many in this country that haven’t been affected to some extent by his company’s products. Indeed, in the late 1800s there weren’t many bathroom vanities (or outhouses, for that matter) that didn’t have one of the products of the Scott Paper Company around somewhere. Edward Irvin Scott is buried in the Eastlawn Cemetery in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Now, don’t forget to thank this guy every time you have to… you know.

Margaux Louise Hemingway 1954-1996

April 1st, 2008

Margaux Louise Hemingway was a fam0ous actress, appearing in sixteen films and numerous ads, mostly perfume ads. If the name sounds familiar, it should. She was the granddaughter of Nobel prize winning author Ernest Hemmingway. After two failed marriages and a stint in the Betty Ford clinic (famous for celerity alcohol and drug rehabilitation) she spent the last years of her life working at a psychic hotline. Her cause of death is unclear, with family and the coroner’s report blaming a seizure and the police claiming accidental drug overdose. Margaux Louise Hemingway is buried in Ketchum Cemetery in Ketchum Idaho.
